She Called for Her Dad Three Times
Eleven years of excuses shatter in one afternoon.
At Poppy's graduation ceremony, an empty seat marks where Elliot should have sat while their daughter called out for him three times without answer. Hours later, Nora discovers him at a shopping center celebrating Maisie's birthday — the child of his college ex-wife — lifting the girl onto his shoulders and kneeling to fasten her shoes with infinite tenderness. The man who insisted he was clumsy with children and too swamped for family duties has been performing fatherhood for someone else's family all along. The realization ends eleven years of Nora absorbing every parental responsibility while Elliot reserved his best self for people he decided needed him more. She files the paperwork, triggering a ninety-day waiting period that forces him to finally learn the daily rhythms of fatherhood as she starts rebuilding the identity she surrendered to the marriage.
